Dubai is one of the best cities in the world for hotel points. Every major chain is there, and some Hyatt redemptions cost less than a mid-range hotel in Chicago. Getting there is the harder part. The best-known airline, Emirates, isn’t in an alliance, and award tickets on its own flights can come with large fees. Here’s how to approach a Dubai trip on points as of October 2026, starting with a safety note you shouldn’t skip.

Before you book: the current advisory

The US State Department rates the UAE Level 3, “Reconsider travel,” due to terrorism and armed conflict. The advisory was issued Aug. 29, 2026 and updated Sept. 17, 2026. It cites the threat of Iranian drone and missile strikes since late February 2026, along with flight disruptions. As of mid-October, Gulf News reported that Dubai’s airport was open with most flights running. Read the full advisory, book refundable whenever you can, and check your travel insurance for war or conflict exclusions.

Flying to Dubai from the US

Emirates restored all 12 of its US gateways in May 2026 after conflict-related suspensions. Those gateways are New York JFK, Newark, Washington Dulles, Boston, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, Orlando, San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles. Not every flight is nonstop: Emirates has historically served Newark (and one of its JFK flights) via Europe, so check the routing. AeroRoutes reported fall 2026 frequency cuts on Boston, Miami, Orlando and Seattle, and said schedules from Oct. 25 onward were still pending. For the Midwest, Chicago O’Hare is the obvious starting point.

Which points transfer to Emirates Skywards

ProgramRatio to Skywards (as of October 2026)
Amex Membership Rewards5:4 (1,000 points = 800 miles)
Citi ThankYou5:4
Capital One4:3 (since Jan. 13, 2026)
Bilt1:1
Chase Ultimate RewardsNo longer a partner (dropped October 2025)

Transfers are usually final, so price your flight first. Emirates doesn’t publish an award chart. Use its Miles Calculator, and know that it doesn’t show taxes and fees. Upgraded Points notes that fees on Emirates-operated awards can top $2,000 on some routes. Award types range from Saver (cheaper, less space) to Flex and Flex Plus (more space, more miles).

Alternatives to Emirates

Qatar Airways (oneworld) connects through Doha, and Etihad flies to Abu Dhabi, the neighboring emirate, from several US cities. Both have had regional cancellations in 2026, so check live schedules before moving points. In some cases a one-stop itinerary on a partner airline costs fewer miles or less in fees than a nonstop Emirates award. Compare a few options.

Where to stay on points, by neighborhood

Hyatt prices below use the World of Hyatt chart that took effect May 20, 2026 (five pricing tiers per category). Categories come from published reviews and Hyatt’s May 2026 category change list, so confirm on hyatt.com. Marriott, Hilton and IHG use dynamic pricing, so check your own dates.

Palm Jumeirah: beach resorts

  • Andaz Dubai The Palm (Hyatt): reported as Category 5, so 15,000 to 35,000 points a night. Probably the best-value points beach stay in the city.
  • W Dubai – The Palm (Marriott) and Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah (Hilton): the splurge picks. NerdWallet found standard rooms from about 78,000 Marriott points and 85,000 Hilton points on dates it checked in 2025. Expect different numbers now.
  • IHG: voco Dubai The Palm, Vignette Collection Th8 Palm, and the new Six Senses The Palm are all listed on IHG’s site.

Dubai Marina and JBR

The InterContinental Dubai Marina, Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina and Vignette Collection Ciel Dubai Marina (IHG) put you near the beach walk at JBR. This area works well if you want restaurants within walking distance.

Dubai Creek and Jumeirah: Hyatt’s sweet spots

  • Park Hyatt Dubai: on the Creek, reported as Category 6, so 20,000 to 40,000 points.
  • Grand Hyatt Dubai: reported as Category 4, so 12,000 to 25,000 points. A big resort-style hotel that’s convenient for the airport.
  • Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights: reported as Category 2, so 6,000 to 15,000 points.
  • Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Dubai at La Mer: reported as Category 4. Hyatt Place Dubai Jumeirah moved from Category 1 to 2 in May 2026.

Downtown and Business Bay

For Burj Khalifa views and the Dubai Mall, look at the JW Marriott Marquis, St. Regis Downtown Dubai or Renaissance Business Bay (Marriott), Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown (IHG), or Embassy Suites Business Bay (Hilton). Our New Year’s Eve guide covers this area in more detail.

Practical tips

  • Entry: US citizens can get a free 30-day visitor visa on arrival. Your passport needs at least six months of validity from your entry date.
  • Split your stay. A few nights at a cheap Hyatt on the Creek plus one or two at a Palm resort is an easy way to stretch points.
  • Use Hyatt’s calendar. With five pricing tiers, moving your dates by a day or two can change the price a lot.
  • Know your Chase ratio. Chase Sapphire Reserve transfers to Hyatt 1:1, while Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred now transfer 4:3.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to World of Hyatt, Marriott and IHG, which covers most of the hotels above. You can compare current offers and apply with our Chase referral link.

Our take

On the hotel side, Dubai is excellent: Hyatt’s Creek properties and the Andaz on the Palm can deliver luxury for modest points. The flight is where it gets expensive, because Emirates awards often carry big fees and transfer ratios have gotten worse at Amex, Citi and Capital One. The bigger issue right now is safety. With a Level 3 advisory and an active regional conflict, we’d only book refundable flights and hotels, and many readers may want to wait for conditions to improve before committing points.
