You can now shop for Southwest flights without leaving ChatGPT. On October 6, 2026, Southwest Airlines announced what it calls a first-of-its-kind U.S. airline plugin in ChatGPT, letting travelers find Southwest destinations and compare fares in a chat. Southwest describes it as the first phase of a broader AI booking effort with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services. For Rapid Rewards members, it’s a handy search tool with some clear limits, especially if you plan to pay with points.

What the plugin does

Based on Southwest’s press release and hands-on testing reported by Upgraded Points (as of October 2026):

FeatureStatus
Search Southwest flights and destinationsYes
Change dates, sort, filter by time or nonstopYes, per Upgraded Points
Show all four fare types (Basic, Choice, Choice Preferred, Choice Extra)Yes, per Upgraded Points
Show Rapid Rewards points you’d earnYes, per Upgraded Points
Search or book award (points) faresNo
Complete the purchase inside ChatGPTNo; you continue on Southwest.com
Unaccompanied minors (ages 5–17)Not supported, per Upgraded Points

When you pick a flight, a “Continue on Southwest.com” button opens the airline’s site with that flight selected. You enter passenger and payment details there. Upgraded Points says prices in its test searches matched Southwest.com, and that you aren’t signed in to your Rapid Rewards account when you land on the site, so you’ll need to log in to attach your account and benefits.

How to try it

Per Upgraded Points, you open Plugins from the ChatGPT sidebar, search for Southwest and install it. Then start a new chat, type @Southwest, choose Southwest Airlines and describe your trip. ChatGPT notes it may share relevant chats and memories with the plugin, and you can disconnect it in settings. Southwest also points customers to Southwest.com/chatgpt for more information.

What it means for your points

For now, not much changes. The plugin only shows cash fares, so if you redeem Rapid Rewards points, you’ll still search and book award flights on Southwest.com or the Southwest app. It can still help you plan: because Southwest award prices are tied to cash fares, a quick scan of cheap cash dates in ChatGPT can point you to dates that are likely cheaper in points too. Always confirm the points price on Southwest.com, since we haven’t seen Southwest publish a fixed ratio.

Southwest says it plans to add more AI capabilities over time, but it hasn’t given a timeline or said whether points bookings will come to ChatGPT.

Practical tips

  • Log in before you pay. Sign in to Rapid Rewards on Southwest.com after the handoff so your points, status and any credits apply.
  • Double-check the fare type. Basic fares carry tighter rules than Choice fares. Confirm what you’re buying on the final Southwest.com screen.
  • Treat AI results as a starting point. Confirm times, prices and fare rules on Southwest.com before you pay.
  • Think about privacy. Review what ChatGPT shares with the plugin and disconnect it when you’re done if you prefer.
  • Plan for 2027. Rapid Rewards is changing a lot next year. See our breakdown: Southwest Overhauls Rapid Rewards for 2027.

Our take

This is a convenient way to compare Southwest fares in plain language, and showing the points you’d earn on each fare type is a nice touch. If you already use ChatGPT to plan trips, it’s worth installing.

For points travelers, though, it’s more of a preview than a game-changer. It can’t search award fares, can’t finish a booking and doesn’t keep you logged in to Rapid Rewards, so Southwest.com is still where the real work happens. Southwest only flies its own network, too, so you won’t see options on other airlines. We’ll watch for whether later phases add points bookings.
