Leer en español: Navidad en El Salvador: cómo se viven las fiestas, cuándo viajar y dónde hospedarse con puntos (2026).

If your family is Salvadoran, December is not a trip. It is the trip. Diario El Salvador’s list of December customs puts “receiving relatives from abroad” at number two, with families heading to the airport because December is the month Salvadorans abroad wait for all year. This guide is for the families in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Chicago making that trip, and for the US-born kids and partners going for the first time: the calendar, the midnight meal, the fireworks, the beach week, and which hotels take the points you already have.

Why December is the trip of the year

Salvadoran Christmas is built around the night of December 24, not the morning of the 25th, and the whole month leads up to it. Towns light up at the end of November, the Virgen de Guadalupe fills the basilica in Antiguo Cuscatlán on December 12, posadas move through neighborhoods before Christmas, and the midnight “reventazón” of fireworks on the 24th repeats on the 31st. Then, as Diario El Salvador puts it, after the midnight hug many people keep the party going at the beach. Plan for all of it, not just Christmas Day.

The holiday calendar

Dates are the recurring tradition; 2025 details show what each event typically looks like, since organizers had not posted 2026 programs as of October 2026. The official tourism site elsalvador.travel lists “Navidad 2026” as December 24, 2026 to January 1, 2027, details to come.

Last weekend of NovemberTree lightings, “Desfile del Correo” parades, Christmas villages open. In 2025 Santa Tecla’s free Villa Navideña at El Cafetalón (light walk, ice rink, food zone) ran November 30 to January 6; Santa Ana lit its tree at Parque Libertad.Santa Tecla, Santa Ana, Antiguo Cuscatlán, San Salvador
December 12Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe. Devotees arrive the night of the 11th; in 2025 masses ran from 6:00 a.m. to a solemn 6:00 p.m. mass and an evening serenata.Basílica de Guadalupe, Antiguo Cuscatlán

Nochebuena and the fireworks reality

Nochebuena runs late. Dinner is eaten through the evening, the “abrazo de medianoche” comes at twelve, and that is when the cohetes go off. The scale surprises first-timers: Protección Civil director Luis Amaya told El Diario de Hoy in December 2025 that 60 to 80 percent of the population buys some kind of pyrotechnic product.

The government runs a safety campaign every year, the Plan Fin de Año; the 2025 plan ran through January 5, 2026 with inspections of fireworks shops, road checkpoints and public warnings. Fireworks are legal, but a list of products is banned, among them “silbadores,” mortars above number five, “bombas mezcal” and “buscaniguas,” and letting a child handle fireworks without adult supervision carries fines above $2,000. The numbers explain why: Protección Civil reported at least 115 people burned between December 12 and 29, 2024, including 25 children aged one to nine. If you are bringing US-born kids, treat the midnight reventazón as something to watch from a doorway, not something to hand them.

What is on the table

  • Panes con pollo or panes con chumpe: chicken or turkey in a sauce built on “relajo,” the Salvadoran spice blend, served in a roll with vegetables. Diario El Salvador lists it first on the Nochebuena table. Salvadoran papers spell the turkey both “chumpe” and “chompipe”; both are right.
  • Tamales de gallina and pisques: corn-masa tamales in banana leaf, the chicken version and the plain pisque.
  • Chipilín con queso, listed alongside the tamales.
  • Drinks: soda, beer, wine, cider and horchata.
  • Twelve grapes on New Year’s Eve, one wish each.

The beach escape between Christmas and New Year

The Surf City corridor on the La Libertad coast is about 45 minutes from San Salvador, per El Diario de Hoy’s July 2026 route guide: the Puerto de La Libertad pier and its seafood restaurants, Punta Roca for serious surf, El Zonte for a quieter surf-town feel, and El Tunco, 7 km west of the port, the most visited and the one with the nightlife. The official tourism site adds El Sunzal, described as possibly where surfing in El Salvador began. For New Year’s, the paper’s December 31, 2025 roundup also recommended El Cuco in San Miguel (calm, family-friendly, about 170 km from the capital), La Ventana in Usulután and Las Flores in Chirilagua. From the east, El Cuco is the natural choice; from the capital, Surf City is the easy two-night stay.

Where to stay on points

Most families stay with relatives; points hotels matter for overflow nights, the partner who needs a quiet room, and a late arrival. Every property below appears on its program’s own site as of October 2026. None of those pages shows a points-per-night figure for El Salvador, so we describe the brand tier instead; check the award calendar for your dates. One gap: as of October 2026, none of the five programs lists a property on the La Libertad coast, so the beach stay is cash. Marriott has announced four City Express hotels and a JW Marriott for 2026 to 2027; none was bookable when we checked.

Getting there

Safety, from the State Department

As of October 2026, travel.state.gov rates El Salvador Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions, in an advisory updated June 25, 2026. It states that gang activity and violent crime have dropped sharply since 2022, while robbery, car theft and sexual assault still occur. It also states that the State of Exception declared in March 2022 remains in place: authorities may arrest anyone they believe is involved in gang activity, protections including the right to a speedy trial and access to counsel are suspended, tens of thousands of people are in prison under it awaiting trial, and several US citizens have been detained under it and have not yet faced trial. State’s guidance: enroll in STEP, buy insurance that covers evacuation, note that any blood alcohol level while driving can lead to detention, use major highways and minimize travel outside cities at night, do not resist a robbery, and obey beach warning flags because undertows make swimming dangerous.

The San Salvador hotel nights on this trip can come from a welcome bonus instead of your checking account. If you are considering a Chase card before December, you can apply through our Chase referral link.

Our take

Arrive by December 22 so the kids see the lights and the posadas, spend Nochebuena and the 25th with family, then take two nights on the coast between the 26th and the 30th while the city is quiet. Be back for the 31st: the second reventazón and the twelve grapes are not optional. Use points for the San Salvador nights (the Hyatt Centric and the Sheraton are the two we would check first), pay cash at the beach, and leave the cohetes to the adults who grew up with them.
