If you live in southeast Wisconsin, you face the same question every time you book an award ticket: fly from Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE), or head to Chicago O’Hare for more flights and more award space? Here’s what MKE actually offers as of October 2026, how to use your miles from there, and when the trip south is worth it.
Who flies from MKE
The table below comes from the airport’s official cities-served-nonstop page. The page has no “as of” date; its last update appears to be July 2026. Routes marked seasonal don’t run year-round. Check the airport’s route map or the airline before you count on a flight.

|---|---|---|
| Southwest | Largest list: Austin, Baltimore, Chicago Midway, Dallas Love, Denver, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, San Diego, St. Louis, Tampa, Washington National and more, plus seasonal Florida and Cancun | Rapid Rewards (Chase 1:1) |

Route changes to know about
- Frontier: reported, not confirmed. Travel news sites have reported that Frontier dropped its Atlanta–Milwaukee route as part of wider cuts. The reports don’t agree on timing: one listed a last flight of June 15, 2026, and another described the cuts as taking effect in fall 2026. We couldn’t confirm the cut with Frontier or the airport. MKE’s nonstop page still listed Frontier to Atlanta when we checked, and its 2026 news releases don’t mention it. If you’re counting on a Frontier nonstop, search the actual dates on flyfrontier.com.
- Spirit left MKE. WISN reported in November 2025 that Spirit would end Milwaukee service on Jan. 8, 2026, and Spirit doesn’t appear in the airport’s current airline list.
- Southwest is adding Panama City, Florida. Per the airport’s July 16, 2026 release, the seasonal route starts next March.
- There’s no long-haul international flight yet. MKE’s international nonstops are seasonal leisure routes to Mexico and the Caribbean. The airport’s Concourse E project is described as a new international concourse, and it got another $8 million in federal funding in May 2026, but no new long-haul routes had been announced.
How to use miles from MKE
- Start from MKE and connect at a hub. For Europe or Asia, search the whole trip from MKE first. Delta connects through Detroit, Minneapolis, Atlanta and New York; United through O’Hare, Newark and Houston; and American through O’Hare, Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth and Philadelphia. Award prices vary by program and date. Some programs price MKE and ORD departures similarly, but not always, so search both.
- Book partners for partner flights. United flights can often be booked with Aeroplan. American flights can be booked with British Airways or Iberia Avios. Delta flights can be booked with Virgin Atlantic points. Each uses its own pricing, so compare before you transfer.
- Use Southwest for domestic trips. With the most MKE nonstops of any airline, Rapid Rewards is often the simplest choice for nonstop domestic travel from Milwaukee.
When it’s worth going to O’Hare
O’Hare is a hub for both United and American and has far more international nonstops than MKE. For a breakdown by terminal, see our O’Hare vs. Midway guide for award travelers. Driving or riding down is worth it when:
- You’ve found saver or partner award space on a nonstop from ORD, but the connecting flight from MKE has no award seats.
- You want a foreign airline’s nonstop from Chicago and want to avoid an extra connection.
- The ORD-only award saves a meaningful number of points or a long layover, enough to justify a few hours of ground travel each way.
Getting from Milwaukee to O’Hare
- Bus. Coach USA’s Wisconsin Coach Lines Airport Express runs from the Milwaukee Intermodal Station to O’Hare. Its schedule page showed 14 departures between 5:25 a.m. and 6:25 p.m. on the day we checked, with trips taking 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes. WisDOT says the route also stops at Mitchell Airport, Racine and Kenosha. Fares weren’t shown, so check at booking.
- Amtrak Hiawatha. It goes to Chicago Union Station, not O’Hare. The ride is about 1 hour 29 minutes, per Amtrak, and from there you’d need to connect to the CTA Blue Line. That makes it better for downtown Chicago and Midway trips than for O’Hare. Amtrak’s page mentions seven daily round trips (six on Sundays), while WisDOT’s March 2026 guide says six, so check the current timetable. There’s a station at MKE itself, linked to the terminal by a shuttle, which helps if you’re flying out of MKE.
- Driving. It’s the most flexible option, but traffic on the way to O’Hare is unpredictable and airport parking adds up on long trips. Price parking before you assume driving is cheaper.
Practical tips
- If you position to ORD on your own, the airline isn’t responsible if the bus or train is late. Leave a generous buffer, especially in winter.
- When an award from MKE with a connection costs the same or only a little more than from ORD, booking the whole trip on one ticket usually protects you if the first flight is delayed. Positioning on your own doesn’t.
- Search award space flight by flight. A hub nonstop can have space when the MKE connection doesn’t, and the reverse happens too.
Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to Delta, which serves several of its hubs from MKE, plus partners like Aeroplan, Flying Blue and British Airways, and to hotel programs like Hilton and Marriott for the stay at the other end. Our take
For most domestic trips, MKE is the easy answer. Southwest’s network is broad, every major U.S. airline flies there, and you skip Chicago traffic. For international trips, search from MKE first, because one ticket with a hub connection is simpler and safer. Head to O’Hare only when the award space or the nonstop clearly justifies the extra hours. The downsides of MKE are real: there’s no long-haul international service, nonstops on the smaller airlines can change, and you have only one or two airlines on many routes. If you’re near the state line, ORD might be the closer airport anyway.
