Nowhere in the country does the last fill-up before a rental return sting like Honolulu. Hawaii has the highest pump prices of any state, the stations closest to the airport know they are the last stop before the Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility, and a prepaid-fuel option that costs a few dollars extra on the mainland costs a lot more here. The good news is that Oahu has a Costco with gas 10 to 15 minutes from the return and a cluster of brand stations along Nimitz Highway and Dillingham Boulevard. This guide covers today’s averages, the stations that are actually on the way to HNL, and the rental and Turo fuel rules.

Current averages
| Grade | Honolulu metro average | Hawaii average | US national average | As of | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular | $5.56 | $5.63 | $4.26 | Oct 21, 2026 | AAA |
| Premium | $6.12 | $6.14 | $5.18 | Oct 21, 2026 | AAA |
| Diesel | $7.08 | $7.27 | $6.32 | Oct 21, 2026 | AAA |
Honolulu regular is about $1.30 above the national average. Oahu is slightly cheaper than the state as a whole because the neighbor islands pay even more to ship fuel in.
Stations near the airport
We do not list per-station prices because they change hourly; check GasBuddy, Waze or the AAA app before you leave Waikiki. All the major agencies return to the five-story Consolidated Rent-A-Car (CONRAC) facility directly across from Terminal 2, bounded by Aolele Street and Paiea Street, with the approach from Nimitz Highway or H-1 via Rodgers Boulevard. Follow the airport’s “Rental Car Return” signs.
- Shell (Aloha Island Mart Paiea), 3269 Koapaka St., Honolulu: off Paiea Street immediately east of the airport, under a mile from CONRAC; listed on Aloha Petroleum’s own Shell locator.
- 76, 2140 N. Nimitz Hwy., Honolulu: Nimitz Highway (HI-92) toward downtown, about 2 miles east.
- Aloha (Aloha Island Mart), 1701 Dillingham Blvd., Honolulu: Dillingham Boulevard in Kalihi, about 2.5 miles east; listed on Aloha Island Mart’s Oahu locations page.
- Hele, 2260 Kamehameha Hwy. and Hele, 1529 Dillingham Blvd., Honolulu: both about 2 to 3 miles east on the Dillingham and Kamehameha corridors.
- Shell (Aiea Shell), 99-170 Moanalua Rd., Aiea: off H-1 westbound, about 4 miles west, for travelers coming from the Leeward side or Pearl Harbor.
- Costco Iwilei, 525 Alakawa St., Honolulu (warehouse club, membership required): off Nimitz Highway and Dillingham Boulevard in Iwilei, roughly 3.5 to 4 miles east of CONRAC; costco.com confirms a gas station here, open 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. weekdays and 4:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. weekends. It is directly on the Waikiki-to-airport route along Nimitz.
- Costco Kapolei, 4589 Kapolei Pkwy., Kapolei (warehouse club, membership required): gas station confirmed on costco.com, but about 17 miles west, so only relevant if you are driving in from Ko Olina or the West Side.
Two warnings. The Costco in Hawaii Kai has no gas station, and the Sam’s Club on Keeaumoku Street in Honolulu does not list fuel; the Sam’s Club with fuel is in Pearl City, about 8 miles west of the airport. Costco is also building a standalone gas station at Kapalama Kai near Dillingham Boulevard, but it is not expected to open until 2027.
Rental refuel rules
The choices are the same at every CONRAC counter. Return it full and you pay only the pump price. Prepay a tank and you forfeit whatever is left: Avis says “no credit or refund will be given for unused fuel in the tank,” and Enterprise says prepaid fuel is sold only in full tanks and is not refundable. Let the agency refuel and you pay its local per-gallon rate plus a service charge. In a market where regular is already above $5.50, the agency’s rate is the most expensive gas on the island, so prepaid only wins if you are certain to return on fumes.
Keep your fuel receipt. Avis’s EZFuel rule charges customers who drive fewer than 75 miles a flat fee unless they present a fuel receipt, and a Waikiki-only trip can easily come in under 75 miles. On Turo, the host’s listing sets the fuel policy; Turo’s help center tells guests to refill to the check-in level and to photograph the fuel gauge at check-in and checkout, since hosts have 72 hours to invoice for missing fuel plus a $10 inconvenience fee and the photos decide any dispute.
Local quirks
Hawaii’s prices are structural: every gallon is shipped in, and AAA’s Hawaii average is consistently the highest in the country, which is why the state average sits more than a dollar above the national one in the table above. The practical quirk is that Costco Iwilei sits right on Nimitz Highway between Waikiki and the airport, so members returning a car from Waikiki pass it without a detour. Non-members should plan the Shell on Koapaka Street as the last stop; it is the closest brand station to CONRAC that we could confirm on a brand locator. For the rest of the trip, see our guides to Waikiki hotels on points and flying to Honolulu on miles.
Pay with the right card
A $5.56-a-gallon tank in Honolulu should at least earn you points. Gas stations are a bonus category on several Chase Freedom cards, and the points move to Chase Ultimate Rewards. If you are adding a card, you can apply through our Chase referral link for the Chase Freedom cards.

Our take
Members: Costco Iwilei, then straight down Nimitz to CONRAC. Everyone else: the Shell on Koapaka Street or the 76 on Nimitz, after a glance at GasBuddy. Never prepay fuel in Hawaii, keep the receipt, and photograph the gauge before you hand over the keys.
