Of the three rental statuses on The Platinum Card from American Express, National Emerald Club Executive may be the most practical for everyday U.S. travel. It doesn’t come with a discount code, but it lets you reserve a midsize car and drive off in something bigger without stopping at a counter. Here’s what you get and how to set it up, as of October 2026.
What Emerald Club Executive is
Emerald Club is National’s free loyalty program, with three tiers: Emerald Club, Executive and Executive Elite. National says Executive normally takes 12 paid rentals or 40 paid rental days in a calendar year. Base members can pick any midsize-or-larger car on the Emerald Aisle for the midsize rate. Executive members get the Executive Area instead, where you can choose a full-size or larger car and still pay the midsize rate in the U.S. and Canada.
Our favorite Executive Aisle moment so far was Honolulu (HNL). We booked a midsize, walked the Executive Area, and drove out in a brand-new silver Mercedes-Benz convertible. No upgrade charge, no conversation at a counter, no asking anyone’s permission: you pick the car you want and go. That is the whole appeal of Executive in one rental. It will not happen every time, and the aisle at a smaller airport can be thin, but at the big leisure airports the selection is often better than what the midsize rate suggests.
The status you get, and how to enroll
- Status: Emerald Club Executive. AwardWallet and One Mile at a Time report the same tier for The Business Platinum Card. No card gets you Executive Elite, according to AwardWallet.
- How to enroll: Amex says Card Members “must enroll through their American Express online account using their eligible Card.” Go to Benefits, then Car Rental Privileges, and follow the National link. National also has a page titled “Executive Enrollment for American Express Platinum Cardholders” at nationalcar.com/enroll/AMEXPLAT, where you sign in to or create an Emerald Club account.
- Deadlines: neither Amex nor National publishes an enrollment deadline. In July 2026 Amex asked cardholders to re-enroll for Hertz status by December 31, 2026, and Traveling for Miles reported “enrollment required” showing next to National in Amex accounts too. That isn’t confirmed for National, but check yours.
The discounts: there’s no published code
We couldn’t find a current, published National rate discount tied to the Amex Platinum. Neither Amex nor National lists a discount code or percentage for Platinum members, and neither does NerdWallet or Upgraded Points. A National page offering $20 off weekend rentals with any Amex card is still online, but its terms show it ran from December 2019 to January 2020, so ignore it.
The savings come from the perks instead, per National’s benefits page:
- A bigger car for the midsize rate from the Executive Area in the U.S. and Canada.
- A guaranteed upgrade when you reserve a full-size through luxury car in the U.S. and Canada, plus a one-class upgrade, when available, in the U.K., Ireland, France, Spain and Germany.
- Free days sooner: a free rental day takes 6 rental credits instead of 7.
- No second-driver fees for family members or business associates (this applies to all Emerald Club members).
- Skip the counter at more than 50 major U.S. and Canadian airports, with emailed receipts on return.
Do Marriott Bonvoy elites get anything extra at National?
No. Marriott’s own pages list Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty as its car rental partners, and Marriott separately offers SIXT status to its elites (see our Marriott Titanium and SIXT guide). National isn’t on the list. We found no National status match, Bonvoy points deal or discount for Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium or Ambassador members, whether your Bonvoy status comes from the Platinum Card (which includes Gold Elite) or from nights you earned. Our own Marriott lifetime Platinum and Titanium status does nothing at National either.

Who benefits, and our tips
- Business travelers and families who want a bigger car without paying for one. National also ranked No. 2 in J.D. Power’s 2026 rental study (our write-up).
- Book a midsize; that’s the rate the Executive Area perk is built around.
- Since there’s no Amex code, compare National’s price with Hertz under the Amex CDP and with Avis under the Amex AWD.
- Military members can read our premium cards and military fee waiver guide.

Our take
Executive is a strong perk if National is the price leader at your airport: a midsize booking that can turn into a bigger car is real value. The downsides are just as clear. There’s no discount code, the Executive Area’s selection depends on the location and the hour, Executive Elite (which redeems free days on any car class) isn’t available through the card, and Marriott status adds nothing. Enroll, then let price decide between National, Hertz and Avis.
