IHG has a new option in Vienna. In an October 22, 2026 release marking 1,000 open hotels in Europe, IHG said Crowne Plaza Vienna “recently opened” in the city’s Margareten district. It’s the first Crowne Plaza in Austria since the brand left the country, and it gives IHG One Rewards members another upscale place to use points in one of Europe’s most popular city-break destinations.
Here’s what we know about the hotel, where it sits, and how to book it with points.
What’s new
IHG first announced the hotel on June 30, 2026, with a planned opening in late Q3 2026. Its October 22 release confirms the hotel is now open. IHG doesn’t give an exact opening date, so check the hotel’s page on IHG’s website for availability before you plan around it.
According to IHG and Vienna’s official tourism site:

IHG says Crowne Plaza is part of a wider push in the city: as of March 31, 2026, it counted 11 Vienna hotels, including this one, and 20 open and pipeline hotels across Austria.
Why the location matters
Margareten is a residential district just outside Vienna’s historic center, not on the Ringstrasse itself. The upside is the U4 line, which IHG says is accessible from the hotel. The U4 runs toward Schönbrunn in one direction and Karlsplatz, near the State Opera, in the other, so both of Vienna’s big sightseeing areas are a short ride away. If you want to walk out the door to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, though, this isn’t that hotel.
How to book it with points
IHG One Rewards points. IHG uses dynamic award pricing, so the points price changes with demand and dates. We couldn’t confirm a typical rate for this hotel yet, so search a few date ranges on IHG’s site and compare the points price against the cash rate before you redeem.
Transferring Chase points. Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to IHG One Rewards at a 1:1 ratio, as of October 2026. IHG points are usually worth less than Chase points used elsewhere, so it’s often better to use IHG points you already have, or a card’s free-night certificate, than to transfer.
IHG credit card perks. Chase’s IHG One Rewards Premier Business card page lists a fourth Reward Night free on award stays of four or more nights, plus an annual Free Night after your card anniversary that you can top up with points from your IHG account. If you hold an IHG card with those benefits, a four-night Vienna stay is where they’re most useful. Card terms have changed recently, so check the current details on Chase’s site.
Getting there on miles. Austrian Airlines, a Star Alliance member, flies nonstop to Vienna from several U.S. cities, including Chicago O’Hare, Newark, New York JFK, Washington Dulles and Boston. Schedules change by season. For example, AeroRoutes reported in May 2026 that Austrian’s Chicago flights would pause from Jan. 9 to Feb. 7, 2027. Confirm schedules on Austrian’s website, then look for award space through Star Alliance programs such as United MileagePlus or Air Canada Aeroplan.
Want flexible points that can become IHG points or airline miles for Vienna? A Chase Sapphire card earns Ultimate Rewards points that transfer to IHG and to Star Alliance programs like United. If you’re thinking about applying, you can use our Chase referral link.

Our take
Upsides:
- Another IHG redemption in Vienna, in a newly designed building with sustainability certifications.
- Direct U4 access makes Schönbrunn and the Opera area easy to reach.
- A good fit for IHG cardholders who can use a fourth-night-free benefit or a free-night certificate.
Downsides:
- It’s outside the historic center, so you’ll ride the U-Bahn for most sightseeing.
- New hotels can have early kinks, and there are few independent reviews yet.
- Points prices are dynamic, and IHG points transferred from Chase are often not the best use of those points.
If you’re planning a Vienna trip around the Christmas markets or ball season and already have IHG points or a free-night certificate, this hotel is worth checking. If you’re paying with transferred Chase points, compare the price with Hyatt and other options first.
