United Airlines told MileagePlus members on October 13 that it is changing how Premier elite status is earned. Starting with the 2027 qualifying year (which determines status for 2028), flight segments no longer count. Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs), which are driven by what you spend, become the only way to qualify. At the same time, the requirement for top-tier Premier 1K is going up.
Old rules vs. new rules
Today you can qualify with PQPs alone, or with a lower PQP total plus a set number of Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs). In 2027, the combined path disappears:
- Premier Silver: 6,000 PQPs (2026 also allowed 5,000 PQPs + 15 PQFs)
- Premier Gold: 12,000 PQPs (2026 also allowed 10,000 PQPs + 30 PQFs)
- Premier Platinum: 18,000 PQPs (2026 also allowed 15,000 PQPs + 45 PQFs)
- Premier 1K: 32,000 PQPs (2026: 28,000 PQPs, or 22,000 PQPs + 60 PQFs)
The PQP-only numbers for Silver, Gold and Platinum are unchanged. The 1K threshold rises by 4,000 PQPs, about 14% over the current PQP-only route and roughly 45% more PQPs than the 22,000 PQP plus 60-flight combination required. You’ll still need at least four flights on United or United Express during the year to be eligible for any Premier level, according to reports from TPG and Business Traveller. Flights generally earn 1 PQP per dollar spent on the fare.
Credit cards and a small head start
United’s co-branded Chase cards still earn PQPs on spending, at rates and annual caps that differ by card. Check your own card’s current terms, since those details matter a lot more now that spending is the only lever.
United is also giving eligible cardholders a starting deposit worth 5% of their current tier’s requirement at the start of the 2027 year: 300 PQPs for Silver, 600 for Gold, 900 for Platinum and 1,600 for 1K. Reports say members who open an eligible card by December 31, 2026 also qualify.
Separately, United has said PlusPoints upgrades move to dynamic pricing for travel starting February 1, 2027, meaning the number of PlusPoints needed will vary by route, date and demand instead of following a fixed chart. United hasn’t published full details, so expect specifics to change.
Who this affects and what to do
- Frequent, low-fare flyers: if you fly a lot of short, cheap trips and relied on segment counts, you’re the biggest loser. Run your 2026 numbers on a PQP-only basis to see where you’d land in 2027.
- 1K members: budget for 32,000 PQPs, or decide now whether Platinum is good enough.
- Silver through Platinum on the PQP-only route: little changes for you in 2027.
- Everyone: the rules for status you earn in 2026 (for 2027) haven’t changed, so finish this year’s qualification under the current system.
Our take
This is a clear devaluation for a specific group: travelers who fly often but cheaply. United is following the industry’s move toward rewarding dollars rather than butts in seats, and keeping Silver, Gold and Platinum flat softens the blow for most members. The 1K increase is the sharpest change, and by several outlets’ estimates it now makes 1K one of the most expensive top-tier statuses among US airlines to earn through card spend.
The fairest thing to say is that United is betting its network and product are strong enough that customers won’t leave. If you’re a free agent, it’s worth comparing what your spending would earn at American or Delta before committing for 2027, and keeping an eye out for status matches as competitors look for unhappy United flyers.
