United is giving Delta and American elites one more week to jump ship. On October 15, 2026, United said it is extending its “Switch to Better Wi-Fi” status match, which launched at the start of October, to October 22, 2026. In the same announcement, United said its Starlink Wi-Fi is now on more than 635 mainline and United Express aircraft, covering nearly half of its daily departures, and launched a new tool to check whether your flight has it.

If you hold status with Delta or American and fly out of a United hub like Chicago O’Hare, this is worth a close look before the deadline.

How the status match works

Approved applicants get matching United Premier status for 90 days. To keep it through January 2028, you need to hit a spending threshold on United flights during that window. United’s press release lists these thresholds, and The Points Guy and Live and Let’s Fly report the same tier mapping (as of October 2026):

Your current statusUnited status you getSpend to keep it
Delta Silver Medallion / AAdvantage GoldPremier Silver$1,500
Delta Gold Medallion / AAdvantage PlatinumPremier Gold$3,000
Delta Platinum Medallion / AAdvantage Platinum ProPremier Platinum$4,500
Delta Diamond Medallion / AAdvantage Executive PlatinumPremier 1K$7,000

United’s release says you must meet the spending threshold and take a United or United Express flight within 90 days. You apply at united.com/switchtobetterwifi.

Fine print to know

  • U.S. residents only, with current elite status at Delta or American. Status from a trial or promotion doesn’t qualify, per reporting from Yahoo and Live and Let’s Fly.
  • The usual once-every-three-years limit is waived. The Points Guy reports that United’s standard status match rule doesn’t apply to this offer.
  • What counts toward spend: Live and Let’s Fly reports that base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges count, but government taxes, Economy Plus, paid upgrades and other extras don’t, and that tickets must be bought and flown within the challenge window. We couldn’t confirm these details in United’s own terms, so read them carefully when you apply.
  • Some perks may be limited during the trial, such as certain partner benefits, according to Live and Let’s Fly.

The Starlink angle

United is using Wi-Fi as the pitch, and the numbers are big. According to the October 15 release, more than 250,000 customers a day fly on a Starlink-equipped United plane, United is installing about 20 aircraft a week, and it plans to finish the rollout by the end of 2027. United says Starlink is free for MileagePlus members.

The new Starlink Tracker (StarlinkTracker.United.com) lets you enter a flight number up to three days before departure to see if your plane has Starlink. It also shows availability at United hubs, including Chicago, Newark, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston and Denver. United notes aircraft swaps happen, and assignments are usually confirmed within 24 hours of departure.

Practical tips

  • Apply only if you can fly United soon. The 90-day clock starts when you’re approved, so you need real trips planned in that window.
  • Do the math on spend. $3,000 for Premier Gold is a lot of base fare in 90 days for a leisure traveler. If you won’t get close, the 90 days of status is still a nice trial, but don’t expect to keep it.
  • Know the 2027 rules. United is changing how Premier status is earned in 2027. See our breakdown: United Drops Flight Segments From Premier Status in 2027.
  • Don’t abandon status you’ve already earned. Matching to United doesn’t affect your Delta or American status, but splitting your flying could make it harder to requalify elsewhere.

Our take

For Delta or American elites who live near a United hub and expect to fly a lot in the next three months, this is one of the easier paths to United status in years: no segment count, just spend, with status good into 2028. Starlink is a real product advantage, and free Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members is a nice bonus.

The downside is the short window. Spending thousands on base fares in 90 days is hard unless you travel for work or have big trips already planned. And only about half of United’s flights have Starlink today, so the Wi-Fi pitch won’t apply to every trip. If you’re on the fence, apply before October 22 only when you know you can fly United soon.
