The fireworks at the Burj Khalifa are one of the most-watched New Year’s Eve shows in the world, and Dubai sets off displays across the whole emirate. If you’re thinking about ringing in 2027 there with points, here’s what we know as of October 2026: what last year’s celebration looked like, where to watch, how to get around, and which points hotels put you close. Start with the safety section, though. This year it matters more than usual.
Read this first: the 2026 travel advisory
The US State Department’s advisory for the United Arab Emirates is at Level 3: “Reconsider travel to the United Arab Emirates due to terrorism and armed conflict.” It was issued Aug. 29, 2026 and last updated Sept. 17, 2026. It points to the ongoing threat of Iranian drone and missile strikes since hostilities began in late February 2026, and to disrupted commercial flights. The National reported in October 2026 that the UAE Ministry of Defence has counted 2,265 drone attacks on the country since Feb. 28. As of mid-October, Gulf News reported that Dubai International and Abu Dhabi airports were open and flights were running across most of the network, but some foreign airlines had extended suspensions into late 2026 or early 2027.
What that means for you: read the full advisory before you book, enroll in the State Department’s STEP program, book refundable flights and hotels, and check whether your travel insurance excludes war or armed conflict. Many policies do. We’ll be watching for changes, and you should check again right before you go.
What’s announced for New Year’s Eve 2026
As of October 2026, nothing official has been announced for the Dec. 31, 2026 celebration: no fireworks locations, no Burj Park ticket sales, no road closure plan. Dubai’s authorities usually publish those details in late December. Everything below is last year’s pattern (New Year’s Eve 2025, into 2026), so you know what to expect. It is not a 2026 schedule.
| Item | Last year (Dec. 31, 2025) |
|---|---|
| Fireworks | 48 shows at 40 locations across Dubai, per the Dubai Media Office |
| Key sites | Burj Khalifa, Atlantis The Royal, Burj Al Arab, Dubai Festival City, Bluewaters and The Beach JBR, Global Village, Expo City Dubai, Dubai Frame, Hatta and others |
| Dubai Metro | Red and Green lines ran 43 hours straight, from 5 a.m. Dec. 31 to 11:59 p.m. Jan. 1 |
| Dubai Tram | 6 a.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. Jan. 2 |
| Road closures | Started at 4 p.m. around Downtown (including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard and Burj Khalifa Street), expanding until a partial Sheikh Zayed Road closure at 11 p.m. |
| Burj Park (ticketed) | AED 950 adults and AED 550 kids 5 to 12, plus VAT |
Where to watch: free vs. ticketed
Free viewing in Downtown. Last year, Gulf News reported free, gated viewing areas around the Burj Khalifa, such as Burj Vista, Emaar Square, Fountain Views and parts of the Boulevard. Some areas were set aside for families. Entry was first come, first served, and gates closed once each area filled up. Expect to arrive in the afternoon to get in.
Burj Park (ticketed). Emaar’s Burj Park event sat right below the tower, with entertainment, food trucks and a guaranteed spot. Last year tickets were sold in advance only, and food and drinks weren’t included. If Emaar repeats it, watch for a sale announcement in November or December.
Restaurants and hotel parties. Downtown restaurant tables with tower views can cost thousands of dirhams per person. Gulf News reported a range of about AED 2,000 to AED 20,000 last year. Book early if you want one.
Skip Downtown entirely. With dozens of fireworks sites, you can watch from the Palm, JBR or Festival City and avoid the biggest crowds and closures.
Getting there on miles
Emirates is the main nonstop option. It restored all 12 of its US gateways in May 2026 after conflict-related suspensions, but it trimmed some frequencies this fall (Boston, Miami, Orlando and Seattle among them), and schedules after Oct. 25, 2026 were still pending as of AeroRoutes’ August report. Emirates Skywards miles are one way to book. Chase Ultimate Rewards no longer transfers to Emirates (it dropped the partnership in October 2025). Amex Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou transfer at 5:4, Capital One at 4:3, and Bilt at 1:1, according to award-travel trackers. Be ready for big taxes and carrier surcharges on Emirates-operated awards.
Other routes include Qatar Airways via Doha and Etihad to Abu Dhabi, the neighboring emirate. Both have had regional cancellations during the conflict, so check current schedules before you transfer points.
Points hotels near the fireworks
- Marriott Bonvoy: The St. Regis Downtown Dubai, JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai and Renaissance Business Bay Hotel are all in or near Business Bay, next to Downtown. Pricing is dynamic, and New Year’s Eve is likely to be expensive in points.
- IHG One Rewards: Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown and Staybridge Suites Dubai Business Bay are on Marasi Drive in Business Bay. InterContinental Dubai Festival City puts you next to another fireworks site, away from the Downtown crush.
- Hilton Honors: Embassy Suites by Hilton Dubai Business Bay is near Downtown. On the Palm, the Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah is a splurge option. Pricing is dynamic.
- World of Hyatt: Hyatt has no big Downtown hotel. Andaz Dubai The Palm (reported as Category 5, so 15,000 to 35,000 points under the May 2026 chart) works if you watch the Atlantis fireworks instead.
New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year in Downtown, so some hotels may have limited award space, minimum stays or special packages. Search your exact dates, and book refundable.
Practical tips
- Take the metro. Last year the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station was expected to close by about 5 p.m. or when it hit capacity. Gulf News suggested nearby stations such as Emirates Towers, Financial Centre and Business Bay.
- Driving? Plan to be parked before the 4 p.m. closures. Last year Emaar’s area offered more than 20,000 parking spaces with free shuttles.
- Entry rules: US citizens can get a free 30-day visitor visa on arrival, and your passport must be valid for at least six months past your entry date.
- Save the numbers: Police 999, ambulance 998, civil defence 997.

Our take
In a normal year, we’d call Dubai’s New Year’s Eve a bucket-list trip worth the points. This isn’t a normal year. With a Level 3 “reconsider travel” advisory, an active regional conflict and no official 2026 plans yet, we wouldn’t lock in anything nonrefundable. If you still want to go, choose refundable awards and free-cancellation hotel bookings, and recheck the advisory and the official plans in December. Consider watching from a less crowded site than Downtown. If the situation hasn’t improved by then, it’s fine to cancel and save the points for a better time.
