Every year, downtown Milwaukee lights up for the holidays with the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival, presented by Johnson Financial Group. It’s free, it runs for about six weeks, and it’s easy to pair with a Midwest weekend on points. Here’s what’s confirmed for the 2026 season, as of October 2026, from the organizer, Milwaukee Downtown.

What you’ll see

Milwaukee Downtown lists four main displays, plus a public-art Ornament Trail:

  • Community Spirit Park, Cathedral Square Park: more than 100 evergreen trees decorated by over 100 area schools and organizations.
  • “¡Felices Fiestas!,” Pere Marquette Park: animated light sculptures of snow boys and snow girls playing winter sports. This is also where the kickoff happens.
  • Santa’s Celebration Square, Zeidler Union Square: an interactive photo spot with Santa’s electric reindeer, a fireplace and a giant picture frame.
  • Wisconsin Avenue: chandeliers with a new gold motif, decorated harp lamps and holiday storefronts. You can see this stretch on foot or by car.
  • Ornament Trail: 20 oversized ornaments hand-painted by artists with Milwaukee ties, along Wisconsin Avenue, Water Street and the Historic Third Ward, plus a dozen larger ornaments in the Court of Honor median on West Wisconsin Avenue. The organizer says to explore it mid-November through mid-January.

Tips for the kickoff and the Jingle Bus

  • Kickoff night: the organizer promises live music, dance routines, fireworks and a visit from the Clauses, but hadn’t named performers as of October 2026. Arrive for the 5:30 p.m. pre-show if you want a spot near the stage, and dress for a cold November evening by the river.
  • Jingle Bus: a 40-minute narrated tour of the festival’s main displays. Tickets are $8 and can be booked in advance; walk-ups are accepted with cash or card if seats remain. The organizer’s kickoff listing mentions a free Jingle Bus tour after the kickoff show. Watch the Jingle Bus page for 2026 dates.
  • Deer District Holiday Market: the night after the kickoff, the second annual Deer District Holiday Market opens on the plaza at Fiserv Forum and runs Nov. 20 through Dec. 6, 2026, closed Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 26). Admission is free; expect local vendors, photo spots, a holiday performance showcase and seasonal drink specials at the bars around the plaza. 2026 hours had not been posted as of Oct. 25; last year’s pattern was Fridays 4–9 p.m., Saturdays noon–10 p.m., Sundays noon–6 p.m. and weekdays 4–9 p.m., with the city tree lighting on opening night. Full details, including last year’s drink specials and entertainment, are in our Milwaukee Christmas markets guide.
  • Same-trip add-ons: Nov. 20–22 is also Holiday Folk Fair International at State Fair Park in West Allis. We cover it in our Holiday Folk Fair 2026 guide, and our Milwaukee Christmas markets guide has the 2026 market dates.

Getting there

By train: Amtrak’s Hiawatha runs between Chicago Union Station and downtown Milwaukee in about 1 hour 29 minutes, with a stop at Milwaukee Airport. Check the current timetable for evening trains back after the kickoff. By air: Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE) has nonstops on Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country and United; our MKE on miles guide covers which points work best. Pere Marquette Park, Cathedral Square and Zeidler Union Square are all downtown, so once you’re at a central hotel, most of the festival is walkable.

Where to stay on points

These are the downtown points hotels we checked for our Milwaukee on points guide (brands as of October 2026). Award prices change by date, so search your exact nights first.

  • Hyatt Regency Milwaukee (World of Hyatt), 333 W. Kilbourn Ave. A short walk from Pere Marquette Park. Chase points transfer to Hyatt.
  • Hilton Milwaukee (Hilton Honors), 509 W. Wisconsin Ave. Right on the lit-up Wisconsin Avenue stretch.
  • Kimpton Journeyman (IHG One Rewards), 310 E. Chicago St., in the Third Ward, where part of the Ornament Trail runs.
  • The Trade, Autograph Collection (Marriott Bonvoy), 420 W. Juneau Ave., next to Fiserv Forum and the Deer District.

Our personal favorites. When we come down for the lights, we skip the chain award chart and book one of two independents. The first is The Pfister, the 1893 grande dame on East Wisconsin Avenue. We book it either through the Preferred Hotels I Prefer program, which earns points and elite perks at an independent that otherwise sits outside the big loyalty programs, or as an Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts stay on the Platinum Card, which bundles free daily breakfast for two, a room upgrade when available, early check-in and late checkout, and a property credit, with the hotel credit covering a chunk of the rate. The other reason we love the Pfister is the location. It is a short walk to Cathedral Square Park, where the Community Spirit Park trees go up in November and festivals run all year, and to the Milwaukee Public Market in the Third Ward, and an easy walk or quick ride up to Brady Street for Glorioso’s Italian Market and Peter Sciortino’s Bakery. Those three are the stops we send every visitor to; we cover them in Flying into MKE? Don’t miss these three. The second hotel is The Iron Horse Hotel in Walker’s Point, where we ask for a Corner Alcove room: a very comfortable California king bed and a fully stocked minibar in a converted warehouse that feels nothing like a chain. Neither is bookable on hotel points, but both are the stays we actually look forward to.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to World of Hyatt and IHG, which covers two of the downtown hotels above. You can compare current offers and apply with our Chase referral link.

Our take

The Holiday Lights Festival isn’t a reason on its own to fly across the country, but for anyone within driving or Hiawatha distance it’s a great free anchor for a holiday weekend. The kickoff on Nov. 19 is the one night with fireworks and a full show; the rest of the season, the displays are there whenever you walk by. If you can only pick one weekend, Nov. 20–22 stacks the lights with the Folk Fair, which means more to do and also busier hotels. Book the Jingle Bus once 2026 dates post, and price a Hyatt or IHG award before paying cash.
