If your family is flying from O’Hare or Midway to Mexico for Christmas 2026, the useful dates are not the ones on fare-alert sites. They are the days transfer bonuses expire, the day Aeroméxico’s high season starts and ends, and the window when the Héroes Paisanos operation usually runs. Here is a dated calendar, built from sources we could check as of October 21, 2026. Where something is general practice rather than a sourced rule, we say so.
The transfer bonuses running right now
As of October 2026, per AwardTravelFinder’s bonus trackers (verified October 2 for Amex and Capital One, October 7 for Citi), these bonuses are live. Chase’s transfer page was blocked during our checks, so we could not confirm any current Chase bonus.
| Transfer | Bonus | Ends | Does it help Chicago–Mexico? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citi ThankYou → Avianca LifeMiles | +25% | October 24, 2026 | Maybe. LifeMiles books United with no fuel surcharges, but we could not verify a U.S.–Mexico economy price. |
| Amex → Aeroméxico Rewards | +20% (1:1.6 becomes 1:1.92) | October 30, 2026 (Doctor of Credit says October 31) | Weak. From Chicago, Aeroméxico awards price in the 30,000-plus zone. |
| Capital One → British Airways Avios | +20% | October 31, 2026 | Yes, for American. O’Hare–Cancún and O’Hare–Mexico City price at 20,000 Avios one way on BA’s partner chart, by our distance math. |
| Citi ThankYou → Qatar Avios | +35% | October 31, 2026 | Possibly, on American. Sources conflict on Qatar’s 1,152–2,000-mile band (14,500 vs. 18,500). |
General guidance, not a sourced rule: find the award seat first and transfer second, because points you move usually cannot be moved back. Without a bonus, the best-documented option from Chicago is still Air Canada Aeroplan on United: its official chart (version 2026-08) prices North America, including Mexico, at 10,000 points one way for 501–1,500 miles and 12,500 for 1,501–2,750, plus a partner booking fee. By our own great-circle math, O’Hare–Mexico City (about 1,689 miles) is 12,500 and O’Hare–Cancún (about 1,448) is borderline at 10,000; Aeroplan’s own table may differ. Aeroplan takes Amex, Chase, Capital One and Bilt at 1:1.
The calendar
| When | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Now – October 24 | If LifeMiles shows United space you want and you hold Citi points, transfer before the 25% bonus ends. | Citi → LifeMiles bonus ends October 24 (per AwardTravelFinder). |
| Now – October 30/31 | Search award seats for a December 18–23 outbound and early-January return. Book Aeroplan (United) or BA Avios (American) where the space exists. | Amex → Aeroméxico ends October 30 (or 31); Capital One → BA and Citi → Qatar end October 31. Booking peak dates early is general guidance, not a sourced rule. |
| Early November | Price cash fares on Volaris and Viva for interior cities (Guadalajara, León, Morelia, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí). Read up on what you can bring in duty-free. | Volaris and Viva have no U.S. transferable-points partners; Volaris is bookable in Capital One Travel at one cent per point (per AwardWallet, October 12, 2026). |
| Mid-November | Treat this as your last comfortable window to lock in holiday flights. | General guidance, not a sourced rule. We found no reliable source on Thanksgiving-week fare drops, so we skip that claim. |
| Late November | Watch for the 2026 Héroes Paisanos announcement and hotline details. | 2026 dates are not yet announced. In 2025 the winter operation ran November 28 – January 8. |
| December 11 onward | Expect higher Aeroméxico Rewards prices on any award you have not booked. | Aeroméxico’s high season runs December 11, 2026 – January 10, 2027. |
| December 26 – January 10 | Return dates in this stretch are all inside Aeroméxico’s high season. | Per Aeroméxico’s calendar, January 7–10 is still high season; the cheaper low-season rate starts January 11. For other airlines, we have no sourced price calendar. |
What the Aeroméxico dates mean for a Chicago family
Aeroméxico flies O’Hare–Mexico City about twice daily, per the Chicago Department of Aviation’s September 1, 2026 nonstop list. Its O’Hare–Guadalajara route was suspended August 17 to December 16, 2026; one aggregator shows it returning December 10, which is unconfirmed. On Aeroméxico Rewards’ classic chart, Chicago sits in “North America 2” with Canada and New York: 30,000 points one way in low season and 38,000–39,000 in high season (sources conflict), versus 18,000/22,000 for most other U.S. cities. Those chart figures are for Mexico-origin trips, and dynamic pricing since August 2025 has reportedly pushed prices higher. That is why the Amex → Aeroméxico bonus is a weak fit for O’Hare, even at 1:1.92.

Our take
The deadline that matters most is October 31. If you have Capital One miles and your family flies American, the 20% BA bonus makes a 20,000-Avios O’Hare–Mexico City award (by our distance math) cost about 16,667 Capital One miles. If you hold Chase, Amex or Capital One points and United has space, Aeroplan at 10,000–12,500 points one way needs no bonus at all. If you are going to Guadalajara, León or another interior city where Volaris and Viva are the main nonstops, points will not help much: price cash fares in early November and do not wait for a sale we cannot promise. And if Aeroméxico is your airline, try to book before December 11 and return on or after January 11.
