If you live in the Midwest, Milwaukee is easy to overlook because it’s so close. That’s exactly why it works for a points weekend. It’s about 90 minutes from Chicago by train, and this winter has a solid run of holiday events, big arena shows and museum exhibitions. Below are the events we verified on each organizer’s own site, plus how to get there and where to stay on points.

Milwaukee events, November 2026 to January 2027

Dates and prices below are as of October 2026 and come from each organizer’s website. Some events hadn’t posted hours or prices yet; we’ve said so where that’s the case.

A few notes on the list:

  • Looking for the Milwaukee Christkindlmarket? The German-style Christkindlmarket that used to set up in the Deer District isn’t on the organizer’s 2026 calendar. Its locations page lists only Chicago (Daley Plaza), Wrigleyville and Aurora. The Deer District now runs its own free Holiday Market on the same plaza. If you want the Chicago market, see our 2026 Christmas markets roundup.
  • Milwaukee Art Museum admission is $27 for adults and $20 for students, seniors 65+ and military, per the museum’s August 2026 press release. Kids 12 and under get in free, and Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m. are pay-what-you-wish.
  • Fiserv Forum’s calendar was still adding events when we checked. Individual Bucks game dates weren’t listed on the arena page, so check the team schedule before you book a hotel.
  • Planning ahead for summer? Summerfest 2027 runs June 24–26, July 1–3 and July 8–10 at Henry Maier Festival Park, per the festival’s July 2026 announcement.

How to get there

By train: Amtrak Hiawatha

From Chicago, the Hiawatha is usually the easiest option. Amtrak lists a trip time of about 1 hour 29 minutes between Chicago Union Station and downtown Milwaukee, with stops at Glenview, Sturtevant and Milwaukee Airport. All trains have a Quiet Car and reserved coach seats. Sources disagree on frequency: Amtrak’s Hiawatha page mentions seven daily round trips (six on Sundays), while WisDOT’s March 2026 transit guide says six. Check the current timetable. Fares are usually low enough that paying cash makes more sense than redeeming points.

By air: Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE)

MKE has nonstops on Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country and United. That covers the major hubs, including Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Minneapolis, New York and Seattle. Southwest’s network there is large, so Rapid Rewards points (which transfer from Chase) are often the simplest way to fly in on points. Our O’Hare vs. Midway guide covers the Chicago airports if you’d rather fly into Chicago and take the train north.

Where to stay on points

Marriott, Hilton and IHG all price award nights dynamically, so points rates change by date. Search your exact nights on the program’s site or app before you transfer anything.

  • Hyatt Regency Milwaukee (World of Hyatt), 333 W. Kilbourn Ave. This is a large downtown hotel, and Fiserv Forum includes it in its list of where to stay. A November 2025 review put it in Category 2. Hyatt moved to a five-level award chart on May 20, 2026, so confirm the current price on hyatt.com. As of October 2026, Chase points transfer to Hyatt 1:1 from the Sapphire Reserve but 4:3 from the Sapphire Preferred.
  • The Trade, Autograph Collection (Marriott Bonvoy), 420 W. Juneau Ave. It sits just north of Fiserv Forum, close to the Holiday Market, which makes it the obvious pick for a concert or Bucks night.
  • Kimpton Journeyman (IHG One Rewards), 310 E. Chicago St. in the Third Ward, with The Outsider rooftop bar. It’s a good base if you’d rather walk to restaurants than to the arena.
  • Hilton Milwaukee (Hilton Honors), 509 W. Wisconsin Ave. It was renovated in early 2026 and dropped “City Center” from its name. Fiserv Forum describes it as just blocks from the arena.

Our Milwaukee on points companion piece covers each hotel in more detail. It also explains why The Pfister and Saint Kate can’t be booked with the big chain points currencies.

Practical tips

  • The weekend of Nov. 20–22 has the Folk Fair, the Holiday Market’s opening and the lights festival all at once. That makes it the best single weekend to visit, and probably the busiest for hotels.
  • The Folk Fair is in West Allis, not downtown. Budget a rideshare or drive.
  • Downtown parking adds up. Hotel valet runs $56–$60 a night at the Marriott and Westin, per their own pages, which is one more reason to take the train.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points can cover both halves of a Milwaukee weekend: Southwest or United for the flight, and Hyatt, Marriott or IHG for the hotel. You can compare current offers and apply with our Chase referral link.

Our take

For Midwest travelers, Milwaukee between Thanksgiving and New Year’s makes an easy points weekend. The lights festival and Holiday Market are free, the train saves you from downtown parking, and the Hyatt Regency has been in one of Hyatt’s lowest categories, so it’s worth pricing before you look anywhere else. The downsides are real, though. Milwaukee no longer has the big German Christkindlmarket that Chicago has. The Holiday Market is small and only runs about two weeks. It will be cold, and many of the best events (ballet, theater, arena shows) are paid tickets that can sell out on weekends. If you want one big-city holiday market experience, Chicago is still the stronger trip. Milwaukee is the better pick if you’d like a calmer weekend with a show and a museum.
