Milwaukee’s festival season doesn’t stop when the lakefront grounds close. Between early November and the first week of December, four smaller events on Visit Milwaukee’s “City of Festivals” calendar are worth planning around, and most of them are cheap or free. Below are the dates, venues and prices we confirmed on each organizer’s own site, plus how to get there and where to stay on points.
The two biggest events of the season, the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival (Nov. 19, 2026 – Jan. 1, 2027) and Holiday Folk Fair International (Nov. 20–22, 2026), are covered in our November–January Milwaukee events guide.

What to know about each event
- Trainfest (Nov. 7–8). The National Model Railroad Association’s show fills Baird Center exhibit halls A through D, about 170,000 square feet. The organizer lists 250+ booths, 500+ tables and 50+ operating model train layouts, plus clinics and manufacturer displays. Kids ride a train for free. Tickets are sold through the organizer’s registration page; we couldn’t see prices there, so check before you go.
- Kids MusicFest (Nov. 15). Civic Music Milwaukee’s free afternoon includes an instrument “petting zoo” with professional players, drum circles, two performance stages for youth ensembles, a tech lab and a resource fair with area music organizations. It’s an easy add-on if you’re already in town the weekend before the lights festival.
- Christmas in the Ward (Dec. 4). The Historic Third Ward’s tree lighting includes live music, food trucks on North Broadway, s’mores, live reindeer, Santa visits and fireworks over the river. Note that the organizer’s posted schedule is still last year’s and says the 2026 program will be updated in November, so treat specific times as provisional. Parking in either Third Ward structure was $10 after 5 p.m. (credit card only) last year.
- Milwaukee Krampusnacht (Dec. 6). This Alpine-style “anti-Santa” celebration takes over the Brewery District, with vendor halls in Pilot Project and the Barley Room and activities in Best Place and other venues. The ticket page lists general admission at $15 (it rose from $10 on Oct. 15), a $15 Kid’s Krampus Hour from 3 to 5 p.m. (includes one adult admission) and a 21+ “Naughty List” pre-party on Sat., Dec. 5, for $25 that includes a Sunday ticket. The ticket page gives conflicting times: its listing says 7–9 p.m., while the description says Krampusnacht runs 2–9 p.m. Confirm before you plan your evening.
Getting there
From Chicago: Amtrak’s Hiawatha runs between Chicago Union Station and downtown Milwaukee in about 1.5 hours. Trainfest’s Baird Center and Kids MusicFest’s venue are both a short ride from the downtown station; check Amtrak’s current timetable for frequency.
By air: Milwaukee Mitchell (MKE) has nonstops on Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country and United, according to the airport’s route list.
Parking: Trainfest says there are plenty of parking options around the Baird Center. For the Third Ward, the organizer points to the neighborhood’s two parking structures.
Where to stay on points
- Hilton Milwaukee (Hilton Honors), 509 W. Wisconsin Ave., is on the same street as the Baird Center, which makes it the simplest pick for Trainfest.
- Hyatt Regency Milwaukee (World of Hyatt), 333 W. Kilbourn Ave., is a few blocks north of the Baird Center. Hyatt changed its award chart in May 2026, so check the current points price on hyatt.com.
- Kimpton Journeyman Hotel (IHG One Rewards), 310 E. Chicago St., is in the Third Ward, a short walk from Catalano Square for Christmas in the Ward.
Krampusnacht’s organizer lists the Brewhouse Inn & Suites in the Brewery District as its official hotel, with a special-rate link on its website. Hilton and IHG price award nights dynamically, so compare points against the cash rate for your dates. Our Milwaukee on points guide has more hotel detail.
Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to both World of Hyatt and IHG One Rewards, which covers two of the hotels above. You can compare current Sapphire offers and apply with our Chase referral link.

Our take
None of these four is worth a flight on its own, but they make a good reason to pick a particular weekend. Model-train fans should circle Nov. 7–8; families with kids get a free afternoon on Nov. 15. The strongest combination is Dec. 4–6: the Third Ward tree lighting on Friday and Krampusnacht on Sunday, with the Holiday Lights Festival running downtown all weekend. Just keep an eye on the organizers’ sites, because two of them (Christmas in the Ward and Krampusnacht) still had older schedule details posted as of October 2026.
