The last fill-up before you return a rental at Vienna Airport is where travelers overpay. Pump prices in Austria already run far above American ones, the few stations around Schwechat serve a captive audience, and a rental agency’s refueling service fee on top of a European per-litre price turns one tank into one of the most expensive line items of the trip. This guide gives you Vienna’s current prices in US terms, the stations within minutes of the Parkhaus 4 rental return, the fuel rules that decide whether you pay once or twice, and the Austrian pricing rule that tells you what time of day to fill up.

Conversion: the European Central Bank’s reference rate was $1.1172 per euro on October 30, 2026, and one US gallon is 3.785 litres, so €1.670 per litre is about $7.06 per gallon. E-Control’s Spritpreisrechner publishes the cheapest stations in each province rather than a citywide average, so the Vienna figure is a floor, not a mean; ÖAMTC’s latest published monthly average for Austria (July 2026) is shown for scale. The AAA US national average for regular was $4.17 on November 1, 2026. Diesel is currently the dearer fuel, so check which one your rental takes.

Stations near the airport

We do not quote per-station prices because they change daily; check them live in the E-Control Spritpreisrechner (the official tool), the ÖAMTC app or Waze before you leave the city. Rental cars at Vienna Airport are returned to the Mietwagenzentrum in Parkhaus 4, Level 0, the airport’s centralized rental center; follow the “Arrival” signs off the A4, then “Car Rental Return.” The stations below are the ones E-Control lists closest to the terminal, with the distances its tool reports.

  • BP, Ausfahrtsstraße, 1300 Schwechat-Flughafen: on the airport’s own exit road, about 1.7 km from the terminal, the closest station E-Control lists.
  • Avanti, Reichsstraße 2, 2401 Fischamend: a discount brand, about 2.5 km east of the airport off the B9, for travelers arriving from Bratislava or the Burgenland.
  • eni, Wiener Straße 38, 2401 Fischamend: about 2.7 km, on the B9 through Fischamend.
  • JET, Bruck-Hainburger Straße 28; Avanti, Bruck-Hainburger Straße 24a; and eni, Bruck-Hainburger Straße 19-21, 2320 Schwechat: three brands on the B9 in Schwechat, about 7 km from the terminal, the natural last stop coming from Vienna.
  • Turmöl, Schwadorfer Straße, 2435 Ebergassing: about 6 km south, for travelers arriving on the B10 from the Neusiedler See side.
  • SOCAR, Himberger Straße 56A, 2320 Schwechat: about 7.4 km, for arrivals from the S1 or Himberg.

Warehouse clubs are not a factor: there is no Costco, Sam’s Club or BJ’s in Austria. The discount brands that play that role are Avanti, Turmöl Quick and JET, which fill the top of E-Control’s cheapest list in Vienna.

Rental refuel rules

European rentals default to a same-level rule. Sixt says that “all vehicles must be refueled to the same level that you received at the time of pick up,” and that otherwise it will refuel the car and bill “the fuel or electricity plus a service fee on the final invoice.” Its prepaid option lets you “return the vehicle at any level,” but Sixt’s help pages do not promise a refund for unused fuel, and Hertz’s fuel-purchase terms state that none is given. Prepaying only wins if you bring the car back near empty, and almost nobody arriving for a flight does. Photograph the gauge and odometer at pickup and again in Parkhaus 4, and keep the receipt from your last fill.

Turo is not an option here: its help center lists the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Australia as the only places it operates and says it “doesn’t currently operate in any other countries,” so read the fuel policy of whichever platform you do use.

Local quirks

Austria’s quirk is the clock. Under the federal Spritpreisverordnung, in force since 2009 and extended by the Economy Ministry through the end of 2028, stations may raise prices only once a day, at 12:00 noon, while cuts are allowed at any time. Prices therefore tend to jump at midday and drift down afterward, so fill late in the evening or before noon rather than at 12:30. E-Control’s Spritpreisrechner is the official price tool and the authoritative place to check. Vienna usually sits slightly above the national average, as ÖAMTC notes, and the cheapest listings cluster in the 23rd district (Liesing) and in Schwechat, both on the way to the airport. Pay with the right card

A $7-a-gallon tank in Vienna should at least earn points, and it should never cost you a foreign transaction fee. Gas stations are a bonus category on several Chase Freedom cards, and the points move to Chase Ultimate Rewards; check the card’s foreign transaction fee before using it in Europe. If you are adding a card, you can apply through our Chase referral link for the Chase Freedom cards.

Our take

Fill in Schwechat, not at the airport. The JET, Avanti and eni cluster on Bruck-Hainburger Straße is minutes from the A4; from the east, the Avanti in Fischamend is the equivalent. Fill before noon, decline prepaid fuel, pay in euros on a card with no foreign transaction fee, and photograph the gauge before you leave Parkhaus 4.
