Searching for Milwaukee Christmas markets turns up a confusing mix of old news: a Christkindlmarket that no longer exists, one-night festivals and German markets an hour outside the city. Here’s the real picture for 2026. Milwaukee’s main downtown market is now the Deer District Holiday Market at Fiserv Forum (Nov. 20 – Dec. 6), the Historic Third Ward throws its one-night Christmas in the Ward celebration on Dec. 4, and a few suburban German-style markets are genuinely worth the drive. Below are the dates, locations and costs we could verify as of October 2026 — and we flag what hasn’t been announced yet rather than guessing.

Is there still a Christkindlmarket in Milwaukee?
Short answer: no, not under that name and not downtown. The original Christkindlmarket Milwaukee ran on the plaza outside Fiserv Forum in 2018 and 2019, was canceled in 2020 and again in 2021 (organizers cited a lack of vendor interest), and it has not returned as of October 2026. The Deer District Holiday Market, launched in 2025, now fills the same plaza each holiday season. If you specifically want a ticketed Christkindlmarket, a separate event called Christkindlmarket Wisconsin runs Dec. 11–13, 2026 in Verona, outside Madison ($5 admission, kids 10 and under free) — roughly 90 minutes west of Milwaukee and unrelated to the old Fiserv Forum market. Closer in, West Allis and Menomonee Falls both held small Christkindlmarkt events in December 2025; their 2026 dates had not been announced as of October 2026.
Deer District Holiday Market (Nov. 20 – Dec. 6, 2026)
The closest thing Milwaukee has to a classic downtown Christmas market. The second annual Deer District Holiday Market runs Nov. 20 through Dec. 6, 2026 (closed Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26) on the plaza at Fiserv Forum, and admission is free. Expect a curated lineup of local vendors, festive photo ops, a holiday performance showcase and seasonal food and drink specials from the bars and restaurants ringing the plaza. Daily hours hadn’t been posted as of October 2026 — organizers say full details will be announced in the fall, so check deerdistrict.com before you go. For reference, the 2025 edition ran a shorter Nov. 21–30 window with hours that varied by day.
Christmas in the Ward (Friday, Dec. 4, 2026)
One night only: Friday, Dec. 4, 2026, 5–8 p.m. in Catalano Square in the Historic Third Ward, free to attend. The formula, based on the 2025 program (the Ward says the 2026 schedule will be updated in November): live music from 5 p.m., the tree lighting with Santa around 6 p.m., fireworks over the river around 6:45 p.m., plus live reindeer, a charity cookie sale from local bakeries, food trucks and mulled wine nearby. Parking in the two Third Ward structures is $10 after 5 p.m., card only. If you miss the night itself, the neighborhood’s Shop the Ward promotion runs Dec. 12–23, and the boutiques along Broadway make this Milwaukee’s best holiday-shopping street any day of the season. We covered this event alongside Trainfest and Krampusnacht in our Milwaukee festivals roundup.
Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival (Nov. 19, 2026 – Jan. 1, 2027)
Not a market, but it’s the free backdrop to any market trip downtown. The Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival runs Nov. 19, 2026 through Jan. 1, 2027: Community Spirit Park at Cathedral Square (more than 100 evergreens decorated by local schools and groups), animated displays at Pere Marquette Park, Santa’s Celebration Square photo spots at Zeidler Union Square, and chandeliers and decorated storefronts along Wisconsin Avenue. Event details for the 2026 season, including the popular Jingle Bus tours, were still listed as coming soon in October 2026.
Milwaukee Public Market: the year-round warm-up stop
The Milwaukee Public Market, at the edge of the Third Ward, isn’t a seasonal pop-up — it’s a year-round indoor food hall, open daily with free entry, and no dedicated 2026 holiday program had been announced as of October 2026. It’s still the natural pairing with Christmas in the Ward: a warm place to eat before the tree lighting, with local cheese, chocolate and spice vendors that double as gift stops.
Worth the drive: suburban and small-town markets
Oconomowoc German Christmas Market (Nov. 25–29, 2026)
The most authentically German market in the area, about 35–40 minutes west of downtown. The 2026 run: Friday–Saturday, Nov. 27–28, 10 a.m.–10 p.m. (vendor huts closed at 8 p.m. last year); Sunday, Nov. 29, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; plus an entertainment-tent-only preview Wednesday, Nov. 25, 5–10 p.m. It’s held on the Village Green at 100 E. Wisconsin Ave. Admission is free, with a $3 suggested donation for the heated Wintergarten party tent. Expect 30-plus wooden huts selling Polish pottery, glass ornaments, woodcarvings and woolens, plus fresh glühwein, Hofbräu beer, brats, polka bands and a stein-holding contest. A free shuttle ran from Nature Hill Intermediate School on the busiest days last year.
Cedarburg’s holiday Fridays (Nov. 20 – Dec. 18, 2026)
Cedarburg, about 25 minutes north, does a whole season rather than one market: on Friday nights from Nov. 20 through Dec. 18, 2026, downtown Washington Avenue glows with luminaries and free trolley rides, and the Cedarburg Art Museum runs its ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas evening tours ($10). The town tree lighting is Monday, Nov. 30 at 5:30 p.m. Pair it with the year-round shops in Cedar Creek Settlement for an easy, free evening that feels like a Hallmark set.
Old World Christmas Market, Elkhart Lake (Dec. 4–13, 2026)
About an hour north of Milwaukee at the Osthoff Resort, this European-style indoor market runs daily Dec. 4–13, 2026, with $8 daily admission. Hours are generally 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on weekdays (Wednesday until 7 p.m.), 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Sundays. It’s the region’s longest-running ticketed old-world market and an easy add-on if you’re making a weekend of it.
One-day pop-up markets (most 2026 dates pending)
Milwaukee also runs a steady calendar of one-day maker markets through the season. In 2025 that included the Milwaukee Makers Market at Discovery World (late November and late December), Hover Craft at Pritzlaff Events, pop-ups at the Kimpton Journeyman and Lakefront Brewery, and the West Allis and Menomonee Falls Christkindlmarkt events. Most 2026 dates had not been posted as of October 2026; OnMilwaukee’s annual holiday market guide is the best running list once the season nears.
Where to stay on points
A downtown hotel puts you within walking distance of Deer District, the Holiday Lights route and (with a short rideshare or a chilly 20-minute walk) the Third Ward. Hilton, Marriott, IHG and Hyatt all have downtown options, and early December is shoulder season in Milwaukee, so award pricing is often reasonable — though rates are dynamic and Bucks home games can push up prices near Fiserv Forum, so check your dates. Our full breakdown of which properties are worth your points is in Milwaukee on Points: The Best Hotel Redemptions Downtown.
Getting there
Milwaukee Mitchell International (MKE) sits about 15–20 minutes south of downtown by car, with nonstop service from most major U.S. hubs; Chicago O’Hare is a 90-plus-minute drive or an Amtrak Hiawatha ride away if you find a better award. Downtown is just off I-94/I-794, with paid structures around Deer District and the $10 evening flat rate in the Third Ward structures during events. The suburban markets are car trips — there’s no practical transit option to Oconomowoc, Cedarburg or Elkhart Lake.

Our take
The honest read: Milwaukee doesn’t have a sprawling, weeks-long European-style Christmas market the way Chicago does. The Deer District market is pleasant but compact, and Christmas in the Ward is one (admittedly great) evening. If a classic German market is the whole point of your trip, build it around Oconomowoc’s Thanksgiving-weekend run or Elkhart Lake’s Osthoff market and use Milwaukee as your base. The upside is real, though: everything downtown is free, early-December awards are cheap by big-city standards, and you can cover Deer District, the Holiday Lights displays and the Third Ward in one unhurried weekend — which is more than you can say for elbowing through Christkindlmarket crowds in the Loop.
